Welcome to the
Laraway Road Project
The Will County Division of Transportation (WCDOT) is undertaking major improvements along the Laraway Road corridor from US Route 52 to Harlem Avenue.
The exhibit below shows the status of the various segments of the entire Laraway Road corridor. It depicts the three major sections that are being studied consecutively from west to east, and the targeted timeframe for construction of the various subsections.
project description
Laraway Road (CH 74) is a county highway located in parts of Joliet, Frankfort, New Lenox, and unincorporated Will County. The limits of this Section 2 study are from the intersection of Cedar Road (CH 4) to LaGrange Road (US Route 45), which is approximately 4.5 miles long. Laraway Road is a two-lane road under the jurisdiction of the WCDOT. The area surrounding Laraway Road is primarily agricultural fields and open space with existing residential subdivisions, commercial properties, and institutional (Hickory Creek Middle School) developments. The area is expected to continue to develop and with that it is anticipated that travel demands will only increase. The intent of the project is to address the capacity of the roadway to accommodate future traffic demands while ensuring a safe and efficient traffic flow.
project schedule
Section 2 is currently in the second of three project phases. Phase I consisted of a preliminary engineering and environmental study to develop and evaluate alternatives and identify a preferred alternative to best meet the project goals. As part of this phase, a Public Meeting was held on June 27, 2017. Another Public Meeting was held on April 14, 2021, to present the proposed improvements and solicit public input.
Phase I was completed when design approval was received in December of 2022. Phase II (Design) began in late 2022 and Phase III (Construction) is anticipated to begin in 2026. The anticipated timeline for Phase II and III is subject to change based on availability of funding, project readiness, and right-of-way acquisition.
Section 1 has been broken out into three separate projects. Two of those projects are currently in phase II (design), while the segment from west of Cedar Road to west of Nelson Road is currently in phase III (Construction). Phase 1 was completed for section 1 when design approval was received in November of 2017.
